Brinsworth Academy supports and encourages students across the academy to achieve in a wide range of extra-curricular and out of school activities. The Rotherham academy has seen some fantastic successes from their students and students enjoying the benefits that their extra-curricular training brings, including increased confidence at school, improved leadership and helping to promote the stress-busting, positive mental health benefits from sports and extra-curricular activities.

 

Sporting Success

 

Makyle Iqbal

Makyle, who is in Year 9, swims competitively for both Yorkshire championships and North East regional championships. Makyle’s speciality is butterfly stroke and he is aiming to compete at National level, meaning he will be in the top 20 under 18 swimmers in the country.

Makyle started swimming at a young age and now trains four times a week on evenings and weekends with a personal swimming instructor and regularly takes part in competitions. He has continued to swim since learning at a young age to help him build confidence. He said “I really enjoy the team aspect of swimming competitively. Not only is swimming great fun, it also helps me to keep fit and I love to have a goal to push myself to achieve.”

 

Poppy Wilkinson

Year 8 student Poppy is a competitive gymnast who competes across Yorkshire and the country. Poppy has placed highly and won medals in all the competitions that she has completed including floor, bar, beam and vault gymnastics. In her most recent competition, Poppy competed at the English Espoir Championships and finished in the top ten gymnasts out of one hundred competitors, which was an amazing achievement.

Poppy travels to Leeds five times a week to train. Poppy says, “I am really lucky to have supportive parents who support me by taking me to training every week and to my competitions across the country on a weekend.”

 

Reece Urbaniak

Year 10 student Reece is part of the Under 16 Sheffield Steelers team. He has gone from trying out for the team and being one of the youngest players to being the captain of the team and helping the team to win the league.

Reece travels across the country, training and playing in the hockey league. He hopes to try out for the Sheffield Steel Dogs team when he is 18 and to eventually join the National Hockey League, if he is successful he will be only the fourth English player in the league.

 

Ethan Binza

Year 10 student Ethan plays football both for the school and for local team Phoenix Football Club Under 15s. Ethan was recently the star player and scored the winning goal of the match.

Ethan says being able to play as part of the school team is great and feels the schools is really supportive of taking part in extra-curricular activities.

 

Hisham Walayat

Hisham plays basketball for the Sheffield Sharks under 16 team. Hisham started playing basketball at Brinsworth Academy and realised that it was something that he excelled at and really enjoyed. Hisham entered the trials for the Sheffield team and was chosen to join the team. Following regular training, he hopes to go on to play for the Sheffield United team in the future.

 

Performing Arts

 

Jess Robinson

Year 12 student Jess Robinson was invited to perform at a pre-match gig at the Keepmoat Stadium before a Doncaster Rovers game. Jess is an upcoming singer, songwriter and guitarist and performs her own indie songs as well as a repertoire of covers including Oasis and The Beatles. The pre-match show was a fantastic opportunity for Jess and should be the first of many gigs that Jess will be performing at around the local area.

 

Abbie Walton

Abbie, Year 11 student, is preparing to perform in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre at a one-off, two-hour-long variety show for students across the country. To prepare for the show Abbie has been training every two weeks in London.  To help cover the costs of travelling to London Abbie has been fundraising in the local community.

 

Keeley Kassim

Year 7 student Keeley has won regional street dance competitions. Keeley competes in solo, group and doubles competitions as part of her dance team at Warehouse Studios, in Rotherham. With her dance team Keeley has travelled across the country to compete in competitions.

Keeley’s amazing victories follow a dedicated schedule training four times training and strong support from her dance teachers and parents.
